With summer just around the corner, here in the Luxiere studio, we have been thinking about some of the wonderful places in Europe that we would like to visit this year. Now we all love to take in a good art gallery or history museum whilst on our travels. So we decided what better way to combine our cultural adventures with our love of fashion then by visiting some of Europe’s most famous fashion museums.
Here we take a look at some of the most popular and well-known fashion museums in Europe. Exhibiting everything from collections devoted to particular designers to displays of historical costumes and contemporary fashion items. Wherever you find yourself this summer, be sure to add these stylish museums to your must-visit list!
Fashion Museum, Bath
The Fashion Museum in Bath, which opened in 1963, exhibits a wide range of both contemporary and historic dress. In addition to the spectacular collections, the museum also hosts a number of special exhibitions throughout the year. In 2016, be sure not to miss ‘A History of Fashion in 100 Objects’ and ‘Behind the Scenes’.
Victoria & Albert Museum, London
The Victoria & Albert fashion collection spans over five centuries and includes rare pieces from 17th century gowns to 1930s eveningwear and post-war couture. The V&A fashion collection features items from all over the world with many European items from the 18th century onwards. The special exhibition ‘Undressed: A Brief History of Underwear’ will be held at the V&A Museum throughout 2016.
Christian Dior Museum, Granville
Musee Christian Dior in Villa Le Rhumbs, the designers childhood home is the only museum in France dedicated to a couturier. Located not far from Mont St Michel, the museum (and winter garden) houses a number of collections, as well as hosting special exhibitions each year. A spring / summer exhibition titled ‘Women in Dior: Sublime Elegance of a Portrait’ will run from 05 May to 25 September 2016.

Gucci Museum, Florence
The Gucci Museum is located in the Palazzo della Mercanzia in the heart of Florence, where the designer’s story began. Spanning an impressive three floors, the museum tells the story of an incredible 90 year history of Gucci. As well as the fabulous collections, the museum has a number of facilities, including an Icon store, café and restaurant, bookstore and gift shop.
Museum of Bags & Purses, Amsterdam
The Tassenmuseum Hendrickje is the world’s largest museum of bags and purses. Developed from the private collection of Hendrikje and Heinz Ivo, the museum now houses an impressive collection of over 5,000 bags, pouches, suitcases, purses and matching accessories.

ModeMuseum, Antwerp
The ModeMuseum, or MoMu as it is also called is Belgium’s ultimate fashion experience. The museum does not have permanent displays, rather new expositions are held twice a year based on the MoMu collection of 25,000 pieces and completed with loaned works. ‘Game Changers: Reinventing the 20th Century Silhouette’ will be held here in 2016.
Palais Galliera, Musee de le mode, Paris
The Palais Galliera, City of Paris Museum of Fashion is a must-visit. Presenting only temporary exhibitions, the museum features a number of departments from 18th century dress and 19th century costumes to haute couture and contemporary fashion. The next exhibition titled ‘Anatomy of a Collection’, which will showcase a corset of Marie Antoinette, will be held from 14 May to 23 October 2016.

Cristobal Balenciaga Museoa, Getaria
Dedicated to Cristobal Balenciaga born in Getaria, Spain in 1895, this musum consists of approximately 1,600 items, which is the world’s most extensive collection of Balenciaga creations. The special exhibition ‘Cristobal Balenciaga: A Timeless Legacy’ will be held until 31 December 2016.
